MEREM

Een jaar geleden speelde Vanessa Kourtesi met veel succes in De X met haar eigen rebetiko kwartet. Nu is zij wederom te gast, deze keer met de groep Merem. 

Merem werd in 2021 opgericht in Rotterdam. De leden van de band ontmoetten elkaar tijdens hun studie aan het Rotterdams Conservatorium: Codarts. Omdat ze allemaal uit Griekenland kwamen, wilden ze zich toeleggen op muziek die sterk geworteld is in de muziek van hun vaderland, maar dan wel met een meer hedendaagse benadering en gecombineerd met jazz-elementen.

Ondanks de lockdown tijdens de corona periode, hebben zij toch allerlei nieuwe composities weten te creeren, die ook een duidelijke oosterse geluid in zich meedragen. Merem heeft sinds november 2021 getoerd in Nederland, België, Frankrijk en Griekenland. Afgelopen jaar bracht de groep 2 singles uit, Yiasemi en Athina. In juni 2023 kwam hun meest recente single uit, Daripe, die ook op hun debuutalbum zal figureren, welke uitkomt in september 2023. 

Op dit moment werkt de groep niet alleen aan hun album release concerten, maar componeert de groep ook nieuw materiaal en arrangementen van traditionele Griekse liederen.

A year ago Vanessa Kourtesi played a very successful show at De X with her rebetiko quartet. Now she’s back, this time with the band Merem. Merem was created in Rotterdam in 2021. The members of the band met there during their
studies in Codarts Conservatory. Their common roots, as they all come from Greece, led them to the need to perform music that is strongly connected to their home country, combining it with jazz flavours and a modern sound. Despite the lockdown and the sterile period of covid, they have brought new compositions that clearly bring an eastern flavour to their music.

Since November 2021 they have toured in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Greece. Last year they released two singles, Yiasemi and Athina. In June 2023 they released their latest single Daripe from the upcoming full album, to be released in September 2023

At the moment, they are working on their debut album release concerts as well as composing new material and arrangements of traditional Greek songs.
