DERYA TÜRKAN & SOKRATIS SINOPOULOS

Derya Türkan en Sokratis Sinopoulos leerden elkaar kennen in hun tienerjaren. Ruim 30 jaar later worden de vrienden wereldwijd gezien als de meest toonaangevende artiesten op de Turkse kemenche respectievelijk Griekse lyra, een 3-snarig strijkinstrument met een zangerige, wat weemoedige klank.

Feitelijk gaat het hier om hetzelfde instrument, wat duidelijk al blijkt uit de officiële namen: Istanbul kemençesi (kemenche uit Istanbul) en politiki lyra (lyra uit de stad, oftewel Istanbul, vroeger Constantinopel).

Samen namen de twee maestro’s meerdere platen op, Letters from Istanbul en het meest recente Soundplaces, die wereldwijd op jubelende kritieken mochten rekenen. Zo schrijft Mattie Poels bijvoorbeeld op Musicframes.nl: “De muziek huilt, lacht, danst, vertelt en improviseert”, terwijl New Folk Sounds vermeldt: “Je zou denken dat twee vrijwel identieke instrumenten, waarbij louter melodieën of bourdons [aanhoudende achtergrondtoon, drone] gespeeld worden en geen akkoorden, leidt tot verveling. Niets is minder waar. Met subtiele fraseringen, tegenritmen en polyfone melodielijnen, aangevuld met wisselende bourdons weten Türkan en Sinopoulos de hele cd te boeien.”

Türkan & Sinopoulos (her)ontdekken de muziek van de tradities waar ze beiden van houden, van rebetiko tot dansmuziek uit Istanbul, en van soefimuziek uit Konya tot muziek uit de Cycladen.

Beiden hebben in grote concertzalen wereldwijd gestaan met allerlei samenwerkingen. Derya Türkan speelde ondermeer met grootheden als Kudsi Erguner en Divan Gasparyan, en speelt nog steeds met meesters als Jordi Savall, Ross Daly, Renaud Garcia Fons, en Alim Qasimov. Ook Sokratis Sinopoulos speelde en speelt nog steeds met talloze artiesten uit de jazz, klassieke (niet-westerse) en wereldmuziek, zoals Kayhan Kalhor en Charles Lloyd.

Derya Turkan and Sokratis Sinopoulos share a longtime friendship which started since they met at their late teens and they have been pioneers in collaborations between Greek and Turkish musicians, exploring the commonplaces of the two cultures. Worldwide they are seen as the most influential Istanbul kemencesi or politiki lyra performers for almost three decades now. Actually these are the same instruments, as can be shown by the names already: Istanbul kemençesi (kemenche from Istanbul) and politiki lyra (lyra from the city, meaning the city of Istanbul, formerly known as Constantinopel).

Together the two masters recorded several albums: Letters from Istanbul and the most recent Soundplaces, that got very good critics all over the world. The Dutch Mattie Poels writes on Musicframes.nl: “The musis cries, laughs, dances, narrates and improvises.” And New Folk Sounds: “You would think that with two almost identical instruments, only playing
melodies and drones and no chords, things would get boring. To the contrary. By subtle phrasing, contra rhythms, polyphonic melody lines and changing drones Türkan and Sinopoulos keep fascinating the whole album.”

Türkan & Sinopoulos (re)discover the music of the traditions they both like, from rebetiko to dance music from Istanbul, and from Sufi music from Konya to music from the Cyclades.

Each one of them has performed very important concerts and recordings as a leader or in collaboration with prominent musicians around the world in a variety of musical styles from classical music to contemporary improvisation, from jazz to world music.

Derya Türkan played together, a.o., with masters like Kudsi Erguner and Divan Gasparyan, and still plays with Jordi Savall, Ross Daly, Renaud Garcia Fons, and Alim Qasimov. Sokratis Sinopoulos too played and is still playing with many artists from the jazz, classical and world music, like, a.o., Kayhan Kalhor and Charles Lloyd.
