Loxandra

Uit Thessaloniki komt de groep Loxandra. En net zoals Thessaloniki een kruispunt is van allerhande culturen, zo is ook de muziek van dit 6-koppige ensemble een mengvorm van verschillende elementen.
De muzikale wortels liggen bij de stedelijke muzikale tradities van de Grieken uit Istanbul en Smyrna, de verscheidenheid aan Griekse traditionele muziek en bij de hedendaagse stedelijke muziek zoals rebetika. Dit alles wordt gemixt met elementen uit de klassieke Ottomaanse muziek, Arabische muziek, muziek van de Balkan en van de Sefardische joden.

Hun laatste plaat, In Transition (2018), bevat nog meer invloeden en veel eigen composities, en kreeg zeer veel lovende recensies. De plaat kwam direct op #3 binnen in de European World Music Charts en werd bij onze oosterburen genomineerd voor de 'Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik'.

Virtuoso and limitless music fom Greece

Loxandra Ensemble was formed in 1997 in Thessaloniki, Greece. The band’s name comes from the name of the main character of the eponymous novel written by Greek author Maria Iordanidou in 1962. Just as the famous heroine of the novel is known for her great culinary skills, Loxandra Ensemble gathers various "musical ingredients", mixing them to create new one-of-a-kind "dishes".

Loxandra Ensemble’s musical roots spring from the urban music tradition of the Greeks (Romiee) of Istanbul and Smyrna, the highly diverse traditional Greek folklore and contemporary urban Greek music. These are mixed with stylistic references to classic Ottoman music, sounds of the Arabian world, the Balkans and the Sephardi Jews.

Their last album, In Transition (2018), features even more styles and influences and a lot of own compositions and received a lot of raving reviews. It directly entered on #3 in the European World Music Charts and was nominated in Germany for the 'Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik'.
